Tips for Hearing Aid Wearers and Family Members

People are integrating technology into their lives every day to add to their quality of life. With any new technology introduced there is a learning curve and adjustment period. Hearing aids are no exception; in fact the use of hearing aids is considered to be a rehabilitative process.

As with any therapy, you start slow and work your way up to the best results. First-time wearers will rediscover many sounds they did not realize they were missing. Some sounds will be delightful while others will be irksome. And yet, even the irksome sounds are a cause for celebration as it indicates the therapy is successful. Using the audiogram, the manufacturer’s software will estimate the best settings to restore hearing as close as possible to normal. The problem is that, in most cases, the brain can’t immediately tolerate 100%. It can be sensory overload. So the settings usually begin at about 80% of predicted needs. Thereafter, amplification is added at a rate comfortable for the patient. In due time they reach 100%.

TIP: It is recommended you wear your hearing aids all the time. The brain craves the stimulation, even if there is no conversation present. The sound information provided to the brain helps you stay in constant contact with your environment so you can function at your best. Did you drop your car keys? Is the radiator hissing? Is the faucet dripping? All things your hearing can detect and the brain can react to. If there is any reason you do not want to wear them all the time, we’d like to know about it. We want the hearing aids to be comfortable at all times.

TIP: Normally you do not wear hearing aids while sleeping. If there is a need, we will discuss what may work best for you based on your circumstances.

TIP: Do not wear hearing aids when involved in water activity, like bathing, showering, and swimming. Hearing aids should be removed and stored safely prior to beginning these activities.

TIP: You should never leave hearing aids lying around in different places. This is when they could become lost. Have a designated place you put them at night. If you must remove when in public, such as when getting your hair cut, use the carrying case to store them in your pocket, purse, or car.

TIP: Dogs love to eat hearing aids. The smell and possibly the high pitched feedback sound will attract them and they will chew and swallow them. Treat hearing aids like fine jewelry. Store safely.

TIP: For family members who live with hearing aid wearers, there is a need to be supportive. Even with the best technology, hearing aids cannot restore hearing to normal. It’s best to begin a conversation by getting the wearer’s attention. It’s inadvisable to try to converse from room to room. The more distance that separates the two of you, the more difficult (and frustrating) it will be. Line of sight is the ideal setting for conversation, with minimal background noise.
